Abstract
Alaska Statute 18.67, which established the board, was adopted in 1972. Its purpose was to alleviate the financial hardships that result from crime-related medical expenses or from innocent victims' losses of income. It also provides for payments to the dependents of deceased victims. The maximum award allowable per victim per incident is $25,000; however, in cases involving the death of victims with numerous eligible dependents, the maximum allowable is $40,000. The Governor appoints the three board members who decide on cases and who are compensated on a per diem basis for meetings only. A medical doctor and an attorney are included on the board. Administrative costs included staff salaries, travel, and other fees and totaled $92,820.53 for the year. Furthremore, $291,131.02 were awarded to claim applicants. A summary of each claim and the board's decision is provided. The 98 claims are arranged according to claim numbers. Data tables include information on the types of crimes involved, on applications and awards, and on the actual number of crimes reported in Alaska. Recent changes in the statute are reviewed.
