Issued by the Attorney General's Office of North Dakota - this manual offers guidance to the citizens of the State to alert them to all types of consumer fraud and to advise them on available legal remedies.
Abstract
The North Dakota Attorney General is now empowered to combat deceptive and fraudulent business practices in the State. This manual outlines the complaint procedure for victims of consumer fraud and describes several of the deceptive and unlawful schemes by which unwary consumers can be victimized. The types of consumer fraud described in this publication include bait and switch ads from stores, earn-money-at-home schemes, home solicitation sales, unclaimed or respossessed merchandise, auctions, quack cures, referral selling, used car deals, fraudulent gasoline saving devices, phony repairs, home improvement traps, and out-of-state real estate. For example, bait and switch activities feature an advertisement to entice the customer into the store so that a high pressure salesperson can switch the customer to buying something else, usually a higher priced item. The practice includes, but is not limited to, appliances, automobiles, beef, and other food items. A sample consumer complaint form and a list of sources of consumer assistance are included in the pamphlet.
