This training syllabus for police recruits in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Africa, is based on a 6-month training period in a police academy.
Abstract
Subjects for instruction include basic police duties; elementary law; weapons drill and use; police administrative orders, directives, and discipline; and practical first aid. A detailed list of subject area components indicates the number of periods planned for each component. Daily schedules for the training of six groups at once are provided. An introduction explains that the syllabus has been drawn to allow for gradual transition from one subject to another so that the subjects may be easily understood. Recruits are encouraged to read beyond their notes to widen their scope and knowledge and to practice memorizing facts, definitions, and quotations in order to improve their power in remembering details. Oral reading exercises are intended to increase the recruits' knowledge of English, and dictations aim at widening their vocabularies. Furthermore, the practice of report writing and supervised beat duty helps prepare the future officers for their duties. A reference list is not included.
