The pamphlet cites statistics which show that in one-fourth of sexual child abuse cases, the offender is a family member and the abuse may continue for years. The causes of such abuse, according to the pamphlet, arise out of a dysfunctional family unit and the low self-image of the offender. Information on how to help abused children is presented including getting the facts from the abused child without blaming the victim, securing medical care, and contacting the police or a Sexual Assault Center. Additional information is offered about activities of centers such as the Santa Clara Center for Sexual Abuse where the entire family is treated. Since most incestuous relationships happen between fathers and daughters, much of the information is directed to mothers. Feelings and needs of abusive fathers are examined. Short and long-range emotional problems of abused children are also discussed. Information on how to prevent sexual child abuse is given including screening of future child abusers at maternity wards and dissemination of information about sexual child abuse in the community. Case histories and statistical data are included.
