Guidelines are presented for an internship program which allows undergraduate and graduate students of criminal justice to gain practical knowledge of law enforcement.
Abstract
In the Field Experience Program at Southern Illinois University, a student works a minimum of 8 hours per week throughout the semester in a law enforcement agency. Prerequisites for the program as well as its general objectives are first discussed. An outline for law enforcement agencies to use for intern orientation is provided. Topics covered include personnel practices, agency organization, reading materials, selection of work projects, and supervision. The responsibilities of the university and the participating field agency sponsoring the program are detailed. This discussion emphasizes that the student rather than the agency is viewed as the primary beneficiary of the program. Rules for student interns describe eligibility requirements and factors that will govern an intern's work performance. Broad criteria for assessing student progress at the completion of the internship are suggested. The appendixes contain forms used by the internship program, such as applications, applicant questionnaire, and performance rating sheets, along with a description of the Carbondale (Illinois) Police Department Internship Program.
