Both a description and an evaluation are given of the first 13 months of the Canadian Correctional Education Project sponsored by the Faculty of Education, Queen's University, and the Correctional Service of Canada.
Abstract
Components of the program included: (1) the negotiation stage and early months of the contract; (2) functional aspects such as project management, curriculum design and development, and evaluation; and (3) an analysis of the major independent variables which affected the direction and efficiency of the project, including institutional needs, variant platforms, conflicting conceptions of curriculum, differing images of the teacher, the views of the prisoners, and differences in concepts of human systems and management styles. The project study underlined the need for continued investigation and careful evaluation of existing efforts to provide educational opportunities for prisoners in Canadian penitentiaries. A bibliography of 19 sources is provided. Four appendixes include a description of the steps used in program design, a statement of the aims of correctional education, and a list of abbreviations and terms. (Author abstract modified)
