A proposed study of the characteristics of health care providers employed in correctional institutions in the Southeastern United States is described. Project management, organization, and budget are discussed.
Abstract
The project will seek to provide a profile of health care providers in terms of basic demographic factors, education and training, and employment experience. It will also draw conclusions that may be useful to correctional administrators concerned with recruiting and employing such providers and will obtain information that may be of value to institutions that train health care providers. All full-time providers (about 1,000) in eight States will be asked to respond to a survey questionnaire, and the resulting data will be coded for computer analysis. The characteristics for each distinct health care group (physicians, nurses, and others), the total group, and each State will be collected. In addition, comparisons will be made to determine if any unique characteristics emerge based on any separate grouping. Followup contacts are also planned. The project will be completed no later than 1 year from the time of approval for funding, and the final outcome will be published. The required staffing will include the principal investigator, a part-time researcher, and a part-time clerk typist. A budget of $19,000 is estimated for successful implementation. The submitter's vita and a proposed budget breakdown are included.
