In 1977, the institute selected 10 broad topics as priorities for research over a 3-to-5-year period. These research priority areas are correlates of crime and determinants of criminal behavior; violent crime and the violent offender; community crime prevention; career criminals and habitual offenders; utilization and deployment of police resources; pretrial process (consistency, fairness, and delay reduction); sentencing; rehabilitation; deterrence; and performance standards and measures for criminal justice. In addition to these designated priorities, the institute also supports major research efforts in areas such as white-collar crime, alternatives to adjudication, police management, organized crime, and probation and parole. The specific focus for the year, as well as proposed research plans in each area are briefly summarized. Under each area, funds available for the coming fiscal year and specific topics for which research proposals are invited are included. A list of advisory committee members, the agenda of the meeting, a summary of the meeting proceedings and discussions, and samples of the questionnaires given to committee members to establish research priority areas are supplied.
