This handbook provides descriptions and analyses of 88 elementary and secondary legal education materials to help teachers identify and choose law instruction curricula to meet their student's needs.
Abstract
The volume also includes many lawyers' critiques of certain materials. Materials include multimedia presentations, student textbooks, teacher resource materials, and games and simulations. Most are designed for use with grades 7 through 12. The materials are classified according to their objectives into six categories: (1) the role of law in society, (2) concepts related to the law, (3) constitutional law and civil rights, (4) criminal law and the criminal justice system, (5) contemporary issues, and (6) substantive law. Following a brief discussion of the goals of legal education materials and a method of appraising them, the authors describe the system used to classify the materials. The materials are then listed alphabetically by title. For each listing, the title, other bibliographic information, source, grade level, and cost are listed, followed by a description and, if available, a summary of lawyers' critiques. Descriptions cover the rationale and objectives for each program, intended user characteristics, time necessary for implementation, major teaching/learning strategy, and content focus. The handbook also contains a list of related resources in the ERIC system; an annotated bibliography of books for young children; a list of the attorneys who provided the critiques; and several indexes listing the entries by author title, grade level, category, ad other classifications.
