Types of police collective bargaining organizations include the parental industrial union, independent government employee associations, and independent police associations.
Abstract
Parent industrial unions include (1) the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees; (2) the American Federation of Government Employees; (3) the National Union of Police Officers; and (4) the Teamsters Union. Government employee associations include the National Association of Government Employees and the Assembly of Government Employees. Independent police associations exist at the national, State, and local levels. Parent industrial unions may integrate public and private sector employees in locals or may limit membership to one type or the other. These types of unions also charter locals on the basis of public sector occupation. Government associations limit their membership to public employees regardless of their specific occupation. Independent police associations limit their membership to police personnel only. Further information is given on each organization's membership and organizational aims. Twelve references are included.
