This Uniform Crime Report presents data on crime in Virginia during calendar year 1977.
Abstract
Individual sections present background information on the State's Uniform Crime Reporting program, on crime Index offenses, and on the value of property stolen and recovered. Arrest data, the number of law enforcement officers killed and assaulted, and statistics by planning district are also presented. In summary, 206,164 serious crimes were reported; 23 percent of these offenses were cleared. The State's crime rate was 4,050.37 Part I offenses per 100,000 inhabitants. Of the 273,886 arrests, 14.9 percent involved persons under 18 years of age. The value of property stolen was $62,028,313; 34.7 percent was recovered. Furthermore, residential burglaries accounted for 63.1 percent of all burglaries reported, and 24.4 percent of these were committed at night. Robbery accounted for property losses totaling $1,902,596, and 11,623 motor vehicle thefts resulted in losses of $21,523,369. Firearms were used in 68.1 percent of all murders and nonnegligent manslaughter cases reported. Of the 8,465 reported aggravated assaults, 23.6 percent were committed by the use of hands, fists, or feet. While 1 law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty, 98.2 percent of the 1,694 assaults on officers were cleared. Data tables, charts, and graphs are included.
