The State's Uniform Crime Reporting Program is described, and data are given on Index offenses, value of property stolen and recovered, arrests, law enforcement officers killed and assaulted, and on Index offenses and property crimes by State planning districts. Overall, 209,096 serious crimes were reported, and 23.9 percent of these were cleared. The crime rate was 4,059 Part I offenses for every 100,000 inhabitants. Arrests totaled 277,642, and 14.3 percent of these involved persons under 18 years of age. The value of property stolen amounted to $74,132,258; 34.7 percent was recovered. Furthermore, robbery accounted for $2,563,778 in losses. Residential burglaries made up 62.5 percent of all burglaries reported, and 20.8 percent of these were committed at night. Of the 8,083 aggravated assaults reported, 22.4 percent were committed by the use of hands, fists, or feet. In addition, firearms were used in 72.3 percent of all murder/nonnegligent manslaughter cases, while other weapons accounted for an additional 27.7 percent. A total of 2 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty, and of the 1,464 assaults on officers 98.6 percent were cleared. Tables, charts, graphs, and maps are included.
