Two tables presenting statistics on crime and law enforcement personnel on college campuses are reproduced from the 1979 FBI Uniform Crime Report.
Abstract
The most recent UCR contains material submitted by 293 institutions of higher learning, reporting on the number of offenses known to the police, universities, and colleges. This material appears in the first table. The colleges and universities are arranged alphabetically within an alphabetical order of States. The crimes are broken down into violent crime (murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) and property crime (burglary, larceny or theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson). Additional data is contained in the UCR on the number of full-time law enforcement employees, universities, and colleges, as of October 31, 1979. Law enforcement personnel statistics are arranged by total and by gender. A caution is made against the comparison of such data. The UCR utilizes only population size as a correlate of crime and does not take into account any of the many other factors which affect the volume and types of crime in any one place. The tables further represent less than 10 percent of the institutions of higher learning in the United States.
