The results are reported of a study which tested the relative effectiveness of four instructional techniques for the improvement of interview skills in prerelease program participants.
Abstract
Fifty-six subjects in three prerelease training cycles were randomly assigned to one of four treatment conditions or to a waiting list control condition. The four instructional techniques were model interviewing technique exposure (MOD) using training tapes, role playing (RP), model exposure plus role playing (MRP), and model exposure and role playing with videotape feedback (VIDEO). Judges' ratings of videotaped simulated pretreatment and posttreatment interviews and personnel interviewers' ratings of followup interviews served as criterion measures. Posttest results indicate that both the MRP and VIDEO treatments were significantly greater than the control procedure on all dependent variables: explaining job skills, answering problem questions, appearance and mannerisms, enthusiasm, interview openings and closings, and the composite score. RP was more effective in developing enthusiasm and in increasing the composite score. MOD and MRP ratings had no significant effects on interviewing behavior. On followup ratings, MRP ratings were significantly higher in enthusiasm, and VIDEO ratings were higher in three behavioral areas and on a probability of hire rating.
