The overall goal of the program is to reduce accidents on the highway. The two objectives for attaining this goal are increasing the number of police-motorist contacts by 20 percent and reducing the number of motorists exceeding the speed limit by 25 percent and the average motorist speed by 5 percent. Changes in the number of accidents will be compared with accident rates for the preceding 3 years. Data from spot speed studies conducted in 1977 will be compared to the results of the speed monitoring activities conducted under the program in 1978. An evaluation and analysis of operations report will be produced in October 1978, summarizing the results of the program through June 1978 and covering the first 6 months of operation. The program will consist of fixed-wing aerial patrols over the highway during daylight hours in clear weather and using two planes. High accident location patrol will be emphasized. The program is also expected to increase the number of traffic-related services, such as handling traffic accidents and assisting stalled motorists. Tabular data, a map, and footnotes are included.
