A total of 18 questions are posed dealing with the subject of violent crimes, particularly homicide. Some of the questions concern the amount of violent crime by type and by geographic area within the country, murder rates in general and in the three largest cities, the age and sex of homicide suspects, and the methods employed in homicides. Other questions involve the murder of police and prison staff and the incarceration of murderers and others convicted of violent offenses. Overall, statistics for 1977 indicate that 135,745 violent offenses have taken place, Ontario had the greatest number of offenses, and Prince Edward Island had the lowest number of violent crimes. Extensive graphs or tables illustrate the answer to each question. For each answer, the sources which provided the information are appended. A French language version of the report is included.
