The DUI project uses increased levels of personnel specifically for the purposes of affecting alcohol-related accidents through the detection and apprehension of persons driving under the influence of intoxicants. The evaluation design plans provided that Stockton be divided into two operational areas, with increased enforcement in each area for a period of 6 months. A significant reduction in alcohol-related collisions was realized during experimental times in 1976, and nonalcohol-related collisions were also decreased due to the presence of the task force. There was no apparent effect on street crimes or street crime arrests, but the task force did account for more than half of all DUI arrests made by the department in 1976. Finally, the roadside surveys conducted by the University of the Pacific to measure the Blood Alcohol Content in drivers point to a significant decrease in the number of DUI's when combined across areas.
