This report contains the testimony presented before the Senate Select Committee on Aging relating to domestic violence against the elderly.
Abstract
The testimony covered the four major forms of domestic violence against the elderly: physical, psychological, and material abuse and the violation of rights (i.e., by forcing older persons into nursing homes). Also discussed were services available to the elderly and their families to alleviate some of the possible pressures leading to abusive situations, including community-based services for the elderly and counseling programs. Both State statutes and Federal laws are reviewed. Testimony was presented by abused elderly citizens, police officers, physicians, and social workers. Additional material submitted to the record included the task force report of the New York State Adult Protective Services program.
