Abstract
An introductory section presents historical profiles of a number of jails, a current legal overview, and information on separate standards for jails and long-term institutions. Jail inspection officials and agencies are listed by State; and names, addresses, and telephone numbers are provided. Jails and adult detention centers are listed alphabetically by State and county. The official name of each facility is identified; and addresses and telephone numbers are included. In addition, the names, titles, and telephone numbers of jail administrators are listed, as are the names of chief deputies. Also listed are the types of programs which are in effect either through the facility or through the community. Starting correctional salaries for various positions are indicated, and the total number of staff required to operate the jail -- including clerical and program staff -- is listed. Fiscal information for FY 1979 includes the level of the annual and capital budgets; for FY 1980, the amount of construction money already appropriated is listed. Physical plant information includes the year originally constructed, the year of last renovation, the degree of security, and the inmate capacity rating. Finally, average daily population data for FY 79 include figures for adult and juvenile inmates and the racial composition. Appendixes include 104-item bibliography of books, reports, and studies of American jails; information on a training approach for correctional staff; a census of jails and a survey of jail inmates for 1978; and information on the American Correctional Association.
