Each lesson plan includes a dramatic skit for student presentation which focuses on offenses that are frequently not considered 'serious' by modern juveniles. The first four skits deal with shoplifting, buying stolen goods, employee theft, and vandalism, while the fifth skit dramatizes a shoplifting trial in a juvenile court. The plots are simple, everyday situations to which students can easily relate. The followup questions involve students in the moral decisionmaking and lead the class from the issue of personal responsibility to that of social responsibility. In addition to sharpening crime awareness, the skits help to build basic skills. A reading paragraph and new vocabulary words, followed by exercises in comprehension, alphabetizing, and vocabulary supplements each skit. The kit also includes additional ideas and materials, such as puzzles suitable for thermofaxed reproduction to help students recognize crime and prevent it, a bibliography of 24 films, 17 books, and 15 articles on crime prevention, and curriculum-expanding suggestions exploring crime prevention through the arts, social studies, math, and other subjects. Role-playing suggestions increase the student actors' understanding of themselves as well as of crime. A movie poster gives the class skits star billing, and learning posters illustrate crime detection and prevention techniques. (Author abstract modified)
