The papers address the problems of crime and vandalism on public transportation systems throughout the Nation, particularly in major urban areas. They are organized around five subject areas: the nature of the mass transit crime problem, requirements for security and safety on mass transit systems, the law enforcement problem, and funding mass transit crime prevention efforts. Also included are the discussions which occurred during the concluding session, when the participants took part in the adoption of resolutions. These resolutions were developed during the meetings of small workshop groups which immediately succeeded the plenary sessions, and they are intended to function as guidelines for future actions in the area of transit crime. A concluding paper notes that conference participants agreed that the problems faced by mass transit systems are as varied as the communities and transit properties in which they exist and that no easy solution is available. Crime on public transportation systems, as with crime in general, is seen as having its roots deep within the moral fabric of society. Reference lists are not included.
