The guide is divided into 16 lesson plans grouped into 4 modules and designed to allow instructors the option of developing courses ranging from 2 to 40 hours in length. For each lesson, training objectives, lesson plans, supporting visual aids, a discussion of major principles, key terms and concepts, discussion questions, an examination with an answer key, and student exercises are provided. The first module focuses on aging and consists of three lesson plans devoted to the graying of America, the process of aging, and the psychology of aging. The second module centers on victimization of the elderly, including crimes affecting the elderly, the impact of crime, and ways to confront the problem. The next module presents techniques for dealing with older victims, witnesses, and persons in need of assistance. It also provides programming and media relations guidelines. The final module provides the police practitioner with skills to plan, implement, and monitor an older volunteer program within a law enforcement setting.
