Abstract
Trend tables, volume summaries, and distributions of offender characteristics compose the report. The trend tables provide comparative statistics for 1967-1977 on size, movement, average time served, and average sentence length of offenders in Federal Prison System institutions. For the users' convenience, summaries of the volume of the fiscal years' admissions and discharges, as well as the population on the last day of fiscal years 1976 and 1977, are included. The summary totals are the most accurate record of population size and change during the year. The reports on offender characteristics are organized into three sections: yearend population, admissions, and discharges. Historical trend tables are included only in the 1977 section of the report. Data in the characteristics tables pertain only to the Federal offender population housed in Federal institutions during or on the last day of the fiscal year. Further, the data describe primarily the sentenced population. To aid the reader, reports which are not 100-percent complete are annotated with the actual reporting universe and the completeness of the report as a percentage of that universe. A list of Federal Prison System institutions and community centers and a Federal Prison System map are appended. (Author abstract modified)
