Activities of the director's office, the detention center, the prerelease center, the alternative community services program, and the correctional training academy are delineated. The department's role as an area research center for the National Institute of Corrections is also described. The department's achievements during fiscal year 1980 include approval and implementation of a career development plan; reimbursement by the State of Maryland for holding State-sentenced inmates at the detention center for a total amount of $525,249; the receipt of $50,000 worth of staff training from the National Institute of Corrections; self-evaluation of the detention center in preparation for undergoing the process to receive formal accreditation; and a role in preparing two legislative bills affecting the correctional system. The major project remaining is to construct an indoor gymnasium at the detention center. A staff educational profile, descriptions of the college intern program, and a staff directory are appended.
