The program outlines the six stages that generally occur in proceedings against adult offenders. These include the stage of investigation and arrest that covers all steps from the time the investigating authorities learn of the offense until the initial appearance or presentation of the accused before a judicial officer; the formal charge stage, in which specific charges are filed and the suspect must be formally informed of them before he is tried; and the stage of pretrial motions, or requests for the court to take certain actions such as motion to dismiss, to quash the indictment, for discovery, or change of venue. The program also outlines the trial process including jury selection, opening statement, case for the prosecution, cross-examination, judgment, and sentence. In addition, the appeal stage, in which questionable decisions are reviewed by a higher court on appeal, is described briefly.
