This 1978-79 annual report describes the activities and achievements of Tuskegee Institute's Youth Services Program, which provides activities for 1,600 rural youths between the ages of 8 and 18 who live in selected high risk juvenile crime communities in four Alabama counties.
Abstract
The program concentrates on community-based enrichment programs, academic tutoring, vocational and career education and awareness, cultural education and enrichment, family and youth counseling, arts and crafts, leadership development, citizenship education, parent effectiveness training, and social and recreational activities. The primary vehicle for the delivery of these services are organized youth and parent clubs. Activities for the year at the Residential Leadership Camp, the Youth Club Express (a monthly newspaper produced by youths), Parent Effectiveness Training workshops, tutorial programs, softball/baseball programs, and summer day camps are described. Youth excursions to cultural centers and historical sites, career education (including a community job-bank component), and technical assistance are also discussed. An internal evaluation of the program supports its effectiveness. Tabular data, a staff roster, and photographs are provided.
