This paper describes The Relatives, a licensed 24-hour emergency shelter for both males and females under the age of 18 and living in crisis in Mecklenburg County, N.C. The shelter provides comprehensive crisis prevention serices for children and parents.
Abstract
Other program services include round-the-clock telephone and walk-in counseling and referral to other community services. The residents are responsible for the daily household functions such as cleaning, other chores, and meals. Upon entering the shelter the participants are told what is expected of them and they then sign an agreement. During the first 3 days, the parents are contacted and a family conference takes place. During the conference a plan is chosen which may include either the client's return home or a decision to stay with the program to complete a responsible plan. Thus, the staff teaches the residents self-responsibility and life skills in a positive manner. The family is also shown constructive ways to reconcile problems. A list of The Relatives' services, resident responsibilities, and a sample of the agreement form and of a plan for participants are included. Information on legal responsibilities of the residents and of the program, on the program's relationship with the Department of Social Services, and on the program personnel is provided.
