The activities of the National Automobile Theft Bureau (NATB) during 1980 are reported.
Abstract
The Bureau is a crime prevention service organization supported by more than 500 property-casualty insurance companies to provide assistance to law enforcement, insurers, and the public. It is an agency for the location and identification of stolen vehicles and for the promotion of auto theft prevention activities. Sections focus on motor vehicle theft statistics; theft investigations; and training, salvage, and computer operations. In addition, the Bureau's internal matters, boat theft prevention efforts, and vehicle arson investigations are discussed. A review of major developments in the Nation which affected Bureau activities is also presented. In sum, NATB participated in the investigation of 438 new theft ring cases in 1980, which resulted in the recovery of 3,949 vehicles. NATB agents directly contributed to investigations culminating in the prosecution of 1,010 persons on charges of larceny, auto theft, and fraud. Data tables and photographs are included.
