Arizona's adult, juvenile, and community services correctional statistics for January 1, 1980, are presented.
Abstract
For adult offenders, data cover commitment offenses, offender characteristics, sentences, county of commitment, releases, and time served to date. Juvenile inmate characteristics and commitment locations are presented in further tables, and statistics for individual correctional facilities are provided. The community services data concern cases added and terminated, caseloads, client characteristics, and counties of residence. An overview of adult corrections explains that the problem of crowded conditions at all adult facilities is worsening. A total of 3,326 inmates represented an 11-percent increase over the January 1, 1979, population and 23 percent more than the 1977 figure. The increases are viewed, in part, as resulting from longer sentences and a reduction in mandatory release eligibility from 6 to 3 months prior to sentence expiration. Maps are included.
