Abstract
Parole offers an opportunity for offenders to serve a portion of their sentences under less restricted custody, usually in the community setting. Parole has been a part of Nebraska's correctional system since 1893. The parole board determines the time of release on parole of committed offenders eligible for such releases, fixes the conditions of parole, revokes parole, issues or authorizes the issuance of warrants for the arrest of parole violators, imposes other sanctions short of revocation for violation of parole conditions, and determines the time of discharge from parole. In addition, the board reviews the record of every committed offender, whether or not eligible for parole, not less than once each year. The board meets wiht offenders and counsels them concerning their progress and prospects for future parole. In making its determinations regarding release on parole, the board considers many factors, including the offender's record, achievements during incarceration, and probability of completing a successful parole period. During this report period, 2,324 parole reviews were held, 477 hearings were granted, 410 paroles were granted, and 38 paroles were denied. Parole revocations numbered 18. A chart and data tables are appended.
