This report provides a statistical summary of the activities of Nebraska's Omaha Police Division, Department of Public Safety for the year 1980.
Abstract
The division's manpower levels remained the same from December 1979 through 1980, with 694 sworn and civilian personnel. In the general demand for police services, the number of police cars assigned to citizen requests for police assistance decreased approximately 3 percent during 1980. A total of 202,876 dispatches were recorded. Crime in Omaha, as reported to the FBI for 1980, increased 0.3 percent over 1979. This was the second year to show an increase in the past 5 years. Arrests for the year totaled 21,832, and traffic citations numbered 136,423. With regard to categories of crime, 1,983 violent crimes were recorded; property crimes totaled 22,447 for 1980, and juvenile arrests totaled 3,116. Larceny, burglary, and vandalism were the major categories of juvenile offenses. In October 1980, the division's vehicle impoundment section moved into new facilities which have a capacity of 230 vehicles, an increase of 40 percent over the previous location. In addition, the community services bureau sponsored 504 lectures, 29 tours, and 199 mobile crime prevention unit demonstrations during the year. The division received an outstanding achievement award for its exemplary uniform program in the 1980 uniform contest sponsored by the National Association of Uniform Manufacturers.
