Annotation
The House Subcommittee on Crime hears testimony that asks that some reconsideration of key provisions of the Speedy Trial Act be given.
Abstract
Witnesses include Government officials, law professors and judges, and representatives of the American Civil Liberties Union. A representative of the Justice Department argues that many cases could not be met under the act's present time limits and suggests extending those limits. A U.S. district court judge from Michigan is concerned with the time limit between arraignment and indictment and trial, which may not supply enough time for the defendant(s) to prepare an adequate defense. Memoranda and other material related to the discussion are appended.
