This orientation manual for the Bergen County Probation Department's Volunteer Services Program (New Jersey), which is designed to help juvenile and young adult offenders, describes the county's criminal justice system and presents job descriptions.
Abstract
The general topics discussed are the need for community support, the nature and special needs of juvenile and young adult offenders, and community resources in Bergen County. The discussion of the criminal justice system and the need for community support includes consideration of volunteer training opportunities and volunteer job descriptions. The description of Bergen County's criminal justice system deals with probation, the juvenile justice system, juvenile processing, and the adult criminal justice process. Considered in the discussion of juvenile and young adult offenders are the special needs of adolescents, profiles of delinquents, their values and the need for respect, and the communication process. Bergen County community resources are also listed. Appended tabular data show the number of cases on probation in municipal and juvenile divisions in 1970-72, types of offenses committed by juveniles placed on probation in 1972, probation officers' evaluation of condition of cases terminated in 1972, the number of juvenile probationers and volunteers by town in the county, the number of volunteers working as sponsors and in other jobs as of July 1973, and the results of assigning probationers to volunteers.
