This booklet details burglary prevention techniques that include door, window, and lock security; interior and exterior lighting; and burglar alarms.
Abstract
Guidelines are given for purchasing secure exterior doors or for making existing doors, such as jalousie or sliding doors, more secure. Suggestions are made for purchasing secure locks for outside doors and for casement, sliding glass, double-hung, awning, and jalousie windows. Pointers on exterior security include keeping shrubs trimmed away from doors and windows, maintaining adequate exterior lighting, locking up the garage door, and putting away all tools. In addition, the booklet tells homeowners how to use timers to make a house appear occupied, what to do when leaving on vacation, and what to do when purchasing a burglar alarm system. Finally, the value of such programs as neighborhood awareness or Operation Identification in preventing burglaries is discussed. Drawings are supplied.
