This volume of papers documents a theoretical and statistical linkage between abuse as a child and subsequent juvenile delinquency.
Abstract
The chapters report current research, develop policy recommendations for treatment approaches that take physical or sexual abuse into account, and explore experimental efforts to deal with the problem. Papers examine current U.S. policies and programs which in effect, promote juvenile delinquency; criticize the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act and the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, and offer alternative approaches. One paper is concerned with preventing delinquent behavior among children who have been placed in foster homes following abuse, while another focuses on a method of issue-oriented group therapy for child abusers as a means of reducing juvenile delinquency. Several papers address research and theoretical issues. One discusses deviant behaviors of child victims and bystanders in violent families; another presents a multidisciplinary conceptual framework for family analysis relevant to child abuse, neglect, juvenile delinquency, and crime. Selected literature is reviewed on juvenile delinquency, cross-cultural child rearing, and child abuse. Several studies support a strong relationship between child abuse and juvenile delinquency. Data tables, charts, and reference lists are included. An index is not provided. For individual papers, see NCJ 77712-26.
