The role of prison Jaycee chapters is to cultivate among inmate members service to the prison population. This can be done by planning visitation from local chapters outside the prison, encouraging members of prison chapters to transfer their memberships when they are moved within the correctional system or are released, and by extending a helping hand to a Jaycee who is being released from prison. Although reentry assistance may be a relatively simple, informal undertaking, it can also involve a major commitment of chapter resources and close work with probation and parole offices. Such activity may extend to helping inmates just prior to their release from prison. Prison Jaycee chapters are often unable to attend State, regional, or district training sessions; therefore, they need outside resources for training their officers and members. Any Jaycee can help by either conducting training sessions or arranging for other Jaycee trainers to conduct sessions. Project assistance involves local chapter members helping a prison chapter plan, conduct, and report on any approved project. This will usually involve working in close cooperation with prison authorities to ensure that the projects being considered are acceptable. Guidance is also given for starting a prison chapter. Appended are a do's and don'ts checklist, a list of problems and how they may be solved, suggestions of projects for prison chapters, a description of a nationwide referral program for transfer assistance, and the description of a model reentry project.
