This report outlines selected population characteristics of the Australian police force, derived from the 1976 Census of Population and Housing. Some tables compare data derived from the 1976 census with that from the 1971 census.
Abstract
Findings concerning the distribution of police by State and Territory show greater increases in the number of police than in population growth. The distribution of police by sex and age indicates an increase in the percentage of female police officers and in the proportion of police under age 35. Other data depict the occupation of persons in the police industry, the numbers of police and their percentage of the population in metropolitan areas, and the educational qualifications and income of police. Tabular data and graphs are included.
