This booklet suggests that an architect can help reduce vandalism by stimulating a sense of pride and responsibility among building users. This can be facilitated by (1) creating a design that is varied and interesting, (2) using good materials suited to their purpose, and (3) by involving users in the design where possible. Design should also make it easy for responsible users of the building to observe areas where vandalism is likely. Specific principles and patterns to avoid are suggested for the building's general form, the circulation of users, walls, glazing, doors, roofs and ceilings, floors, services, lighting, landscaping and boundaries, and fittings and furniture. In housing developments, management should provide for leisure activity options for all age groups and should involve tenants in the planning. Tenant associations should also be encouraged.
