Abstract
Youth courts reported 11,190 cases handled in 1976, with 11,038 classified as delinquent cases, 78 classified as traffic cases, and 74 as special proceedings cases. Law enforcement agencies referred 85 percent of the cases; parents or relative referred 9 percent; and social agencies, schools, probation officers, and other sources referred 6 percent of the children's cases. Those held in jail or police stations included 1,227 males and 242 females. The average age of juveniles referred to the courts in 1976 was 15 years and 4 months. Of the children referred, 50 percent were white, 49 percent were black, and 1 percent was Indian or other race. Data tables, a graph, and the data collection form are included.
