The data were taken from a prescribed form provided by the National Center of Juvenile Justice. Youth courts reported 11,547 cases disposed in 1977, with 11,110 classified as delinquent cases, 72 classified as traffic cases, 50 as special proceedings cases, and 315 as neglect and abuse cases. Law enforcement agencies referred 80 percent of all cases; parents or relatives referred 12 percent; and social agencies, probation officers, schools, and other sources referred 8 percent. Males composed 74 percent of all reported cases and females 26 percent. About 52 percent of these cases were white, 47 percent black, and 1 percent Indian or another race. The average age of children referred to the youth courts was 15 years and 3 months. In 1976, the average age was 15 years and 4 months. Data tables and the data collection form are provided.
