Kansas crime statistics are presented for 1979.
Abstract
Crime Index offenses increased by 8.7 percent, from 104,110 in 1978 to 112,539 in 1979; and violent crime increased by 9.9 percent over 1978, from 7,362 to 8,172. In the violent crime category, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter decreased from 131 to 129; rape increased from 577 in 1978 to 614 in 1979; robbery increased by 9.8 percent, from 2,177 to 2,390; and aggravated assault increased by 12.6 percent, from 4,477 to 5,039. Property crime increased by 7.9 percent over 1978, from 96,748 to 104,367. The value of property stolen in 1979 totaled $46,274,388, and the value of property recovered was $16,145,594. There were 17,744 arrests for Crime Index offenses and 53,023 arrests for Class II offenses, constituting 704 more arrests than in 1978. Two law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty, one in an accident and the other in an aggressive act. A total of 1,290 assaults were committed against police in 1979, compared to 1,001 in 1978. A total of 3,755 full-time sworn law enforcement officers were employed in the State during the year.
