Abstract
The data, collected and analyzed by the Census Bureau for the Bureau of Justice Statistics, include events that were reported to the police and those that were not. The approximately 70 statistical tables, covering information on victims, offenders, crime characteristics and other topics, are based on the portion of the National Crime Survey (NCS) sample that is within Texas, covering an average of some 22,400 persons per year. Most of the data are presented in the form of 6-year means, although basic crime and police reporting rates are given on a yearly basis for 1974-79. The following crimes were investigated: (1) personal crimes, including rape, robbery, assault, and personal larceny; (2) property crimes, including residential burglary, household larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Excluded from consideration were crimes experienced by Texas residents outside the country and by nonresident visitors to the State, such as commuters and foreign visitors. Methodological appendixes and a series of technical notes are appended as aids to the interpretation of survey results. (Author abstract)
