This report is a description of admissions, releases, and transfers within institutions of the Massachusetts Department of Correction during 1980.
Abstract
The information is broken down into a number of specific categories, including type of admission, type of release, institutional transfers, transfers to and from hospitals, transfers to and from houses of correction, admissions and releases from other States, and court of commitment. Overcrowded facilities were one of the main issues facing the department in 1980. The population of all the department's correction facilities jumped from 2,784 at the beginning of the year to 3,100 at the end of 1980. There was a total of 7,327 movements of all types into institutions during the year, an increase of 9 percent from 1979. Movements out of institutions during 1980 totaled 6,990, a 6-percent increase from the previous year. Tables are included. (Author abstract modified)
