This manual instructs citizens on community crime prevention techniques and describes several types of organized crime prevention activities for neighborhoods.
Abstract
The extent of the crime problem in Independence, Mo., is described, and resources available at neighborhood council service centers are listed. Instructions on home security focus on the importance of proper locks for doors and windows, explain what to do when an intruder enters the home and outline steps to take when leaving the house for several days or longer. Guidelines for preventing theft and burglary by the identification of valuables are also given. The elements of a Neighborhood Watch program, in which community residents notify the police if they see suspicious persons, vehicles, or situations, are explained. Guidelines are also given for the 'No Nonsense Neighborhood' program, in which neighbors work together through specific anticrime activities. Other instructions tell senior citizens how to take precautions to prevent crime, list commonsense practices to prevent being robbed on the street or having a purse taken, and describe common confidence games. Guidelines are also given for preventing auto theft or vandalism. A list of potential crime prevention activities for neighborhoods includes the Secret Witness program, a hotline for youths, neighborhood recreation programs, emergency foster homes, drug abuse prevention, child abuse prevention, and 18 other programs. Films and slide presentations available from the Independence Police Department's Police/Community Relations Unit are also listed.
