This annual report of Alberta's Department of the Attorney General covers fiscal year April 1, 1979, to March 31, 1980.
Abstract
The statutory duties of the Attorney General of Alberta are described. The Attorney General has the overall responsibility of administering justice in the Province under civil and criminal law. Alberta's six courts, all constituted by provincial statute, are administered by the Attorney General. The court system is displayed in an organization chart. The organizational judicial districts of the Province are graphically presented. The number of judges and the responsiblities of each court are provided, along with the number of new appointments during the year and a narrative sketch of caseload statistics. Statistics and descriptions of activity are presented for the Department's sections on special matters. The sections cover civil law, constitutional and energy law, criminal justice, gaming control, land titles, law libraries, legal research and analysis, legislative counsel, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and Public Trustee. Statistics and activities of the Department's administration are also provided, dealing with administrative services, communications, court services, financial services, personnel services, and planning, research, and development. The operations of the following boards and associated agencies are described: Crimes Compensation Board, Land Compensation Board, and the Legal Aid Society of Alberta. Comprehensive tabular data on finances and cases are appended.
