The report focuses on the seven Part I (Index) offenses (murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) and the general characteristics of Part I and Part II arrests. Data show that crime in Nebraska has steadily increased since 1971. The total Index crime rate rose gradually from 1971 to 1979, from a low of 2,736 per 100,000 population in 1971 to 4,219 per 100,000 population in 1979. The violent crime rate in 1979 was 42.9 percent above that in 1971. The largest year-to-year percent change in the crime rates for felony assault, robbery, and rape all occurred from 1973 to 1974: felony assault rates increased 22.3 percent, robbery 46 percent, and rape 18.6 percent. Crime rates for larceny-theft and burglary were the highest of any year in 1979, and there was a 4.7-percent increase in the motor vehicle theft rate in 1979 over 1971.
