The bibliographic essay surveys the historical development, strengths, and weaknesses of the overall body of literature on judicial discipline and removal. The essay considers literature on traditional methods of removal (impeachment, resolution and legislative address, and recall), as well as proposals for alternatives to traditional methods. The literature deficiencies cited are believed due to insufficient research; for example, there is no detailed assessment of impeachment at the State level, nor has there been a thorough review of recall and resolution and address in recent years. Subjects which are considered to need the most research, however, relate to judicial-conduct organizations. Case studies, comparative analysis, and impact analysis are discussed as the preferred research methodologies. Annotations of over 370 articles are divided into the major categories of State discipline and removal procedures, Federal discipline and removal procedures, discipline and removal in foreign nations, and judicial ethics.
