Ohio police statistics for 1980 are presented, as submitted by 466 law enforcement agencies participating in the Ohio Uniform Crime Reports Program.
Abstract
The reported Ohio crime index in 1980 was 556,249, an increase of 6.1 percent from 1979. Murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault constituted 9.3 percent of the total index. The remaining percentage of crimes involved burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Violent crime increased 9 percent from 1979, and property crime increased 5.8 percent. Robbery showed the greatest percentage of increase from 1979, amounting to 15 percent. All of the index crime categories experienced an increase from 1979, with the exception of motor vehicle theft, which showed a decrease of 2 percent. A total of 358,480 arrests were reported for Part I and Part II crimes, an 8.2 percent increase from 1979. Juveniles accounted for 22.4 percent of these arrests. Females composed 16.6 percent of the arrests, and 75.9 percent of the reported arrests were white, followed by 22.6 percent black and all other races 1.5 percent. A total of 107,306 index offenses were cleared, an increase of 6 percent from 1979; however, since the number of reported offenses increased, the clearance rate in 1980 remained about the same as in 1979. Statistics are reported individually for the offenses of murder, nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and stolen property. Data are also provided on police officers assaulted or killed. (Author summary modified)
