This article attempts to place the diverse factors (environmental, anthropological-biological, socio-economic, and mental) affecting crime in a suitable conceptual framework.
Abstract
A review is made of past studies of the effects of weather on crime and the results of these studies interpreted in terms of the framework. The many conflicting results reached in past studies on the causal relationship between crime and weather point to the conclusion that: (a) weather is at most one of the factors affecting crime; (b) any causal relationship between crime and weather is ofter masked by other factors, and (c) advanced statistical analysis has to be used to elucidate the causal relationships.
