This final report of the Jamaica Service Program for Older Adults' Senior Citizens Safety Coalition details its accomplishments in crime prevention and victim assistance for elderly residents of southeast Queens County, N.Y. from 1972 through 1980.
Abstract
Chronologies of activities and achievements are presented for each of the program's five goals: promoting community involvement in anticrime efforts, preventing crime and fear of crime, victim assistance, organizing intergenerational projects for senior adults and youths to promote understanding, and encouraging interactions among the 19 LEAA-funded anticrime programs in New York City. Examples of specific projects are workshops in crime prevention, training and deployment of escort volunteers, and publication of a safety newsletter. A narrative of major activities focuses on the success of the victim assistance program, the important contributions of volunteers who conducted many anticrime projects, and intergenerational events. Crime problems addressed during the grant period are discussed, such as street crime and security for elderly residents of a New York City Housing Authority apartment building. Projects which enhanced police department efforts are also described, including Operation Identification, civilian patrols, and block watches. The report concludes with an equipment inventory, financial statement, and the results of a 1981 senior citizens priorities survey. Publicity and educational materials produced by the program are appended, along with several newspaper articles.
